BOU; Contemporary Island Style

Words by Annelies Keus

Imagine you would wake up from the warmth of the sun, breathing in the mornings fresh air, surrounded by white sand and a crystal-clear turquoise ocean. Founder of the brand BOU, Bou Fonua, knows the feeling. Living at the heart of Tongatapu, Tonga, one of many South Pacific islands, most of them uninhabited, lined in white beaches and coral reefs, and covered with tropical rainforest.

Bou states that her fashion brand is known for being the place to go for quality in contemporary island designs. The elegant dresses within her collection are made from soft silk and light knitted cottons, draped to enhance and appreciate the female shape. The collection features A-line skirts in cocktail length and maxi dresses. Subtle details of gold and embroidered prints perfectly complement the color palette, using mainly primary colors in deep pigmented shades.

Last year, BOU showed her collection during Fiji Fashion week, which is the largest single event of its kind in the pacific. In fact, her dresses are an absolute favorite for contestants in local beauty pageants. This season, BOU’s excited to take her career to the next level presenting her collection during Milan Fashion Week with Oxford Fashion Studio this week.
